SCGES has defined a set of recommendations for scientific unions; but its role is also to disseminate recommendations more broadly to contribute to promote changes in the scientific community.
1. Workplace Culture and Well-being
- Promote a respectful and collegial working environment.
- Monitor support, mentoring, and well-being of female academics.
- Define best practices to prevent and address sexual harassment and discrimination.
- Support for Parenthood and Career Progression
- Acknowledge and accommodate child care responsibilities (recommend 18 months per child). In practice this applies mainly for women.
- Support research-only years after maternity/parental leave.
- Accept discontinuous careers and incorporate this into hiring/funding policies.
2. Transparency and Equality
- Publish statistics on salaries, course loads, bonuses, hiring, and promotions, observing progress or difficultis experienced by female academics.
- Ensure gender representation on recruitment committees.
- Offer unconscious/implicit bias training to all hiring personnel.
- Identify a person or a group in charge of gendeer equality inside the institution.
3. Family-Friendly Policies
- Create child-friendly environments.
- Adjust teaching schedules to be compatible with parental responsibilities.
- Provide facilities for families at conferences (e.g., high chairs, changing tables, toys).
4. Institutional Commitment
- Integrate gender equality into all institutional policies.
- Identify persons or teams responsible for monitoring gender balance.
- Involve men in identifying and dismantling barriers.
- Attach financial consequences to unmet diversity action plans.
5. Outreach and Education
- Incorporate gender gap reduction goals in outreach programs.
- Adapt programs to the regional and disciplinary context.
- Provide gender training and critical thinking skills for future teachers.
