Highlighting specific projects led by SCGES partner unions.

• Call for contributions: “Women in Science as Agents of Transformation”. At the initiative of Alejandra Gonzalez (IUBS Committee for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities, Sociedad de Biologia de Chile), women scientists are invited to contribute to a collaborative project entitled “One scientific contribution that changed how science connects with society.” The project will be showcased during the 35th IUBS General Assembly and will result in a short video featuring selected contributions. Participants are invited to share one scientific contribution—such as an idea, method, result, innovation, or collaborative approach—that has had a meaningful impact on society, policy, technology, the environment, or communities. Contributions should be submitted in a simple format (1 slide including a key message, a concrete impact, and an illustrative image), aligned with themes such as nature-based solutions, community-engaged science, knowledge governance, ethics in research, open science, or science for the common good. Submissions should be sent by 31 May 2026 at alegvcl@gmail.com.
• May 12; Celebrating Women in Mathematics. Since 2019, May12 is a joyful opportunity for the mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics. Every year, all around the world, May12 brings together local or virtual events celebrating women in mathematics which take place in the period 1 May to 15 June. Starting from 2025, the May12 initiative is officially sponsored by the Committée for Women in Mathematics of the International Mathematical Union. The date May 12 was chosen because it is Maryam Mirzakhani’s birthday. Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017) was the first woman who received the Fields Medal (in 2014).
• The Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB) was created in 2011 and provided women chemists with the opportunity to join in the International Year of Chemistry, and to celebrate the centenary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie. The GWB series was then relaunched in 2019 as an event held jointly to celebrate the Centenary of the founding of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019). The event takes place every year on 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and is open to all sciences.
