The seminar will feature presentations from the speakers featured below, followed by questions from the audience and a discussion with all participants.

Renee Maria Borges is a Professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.  She is a behavioural ecologist with special interest in inter-species interactions that involve mutualism and parasitism. She is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, where she is also the current Secretary. She is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and a JC Bose National Fellow. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Biosciences, and is on the Editorial Board of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series B and Journal of Chemical Ecology.  She has served on the Council of the International Society for Chemical Ecology, and the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation.

Gerlind Wallon is the head of the EMBO Young Investigator Network, the EMBO Courses and Workshops, co-head of EMBO Global Activities and responsible for Women in Science activities. She has developed the EMBO Laboratory Management Courses for leadership development and co-authored studies on the selection processes and the effects of gender on application success at EMBO, as well as reports on the use of quota in academia and virtual and hybrid meetings. A German native, she graduated with a PhD in Biochemistry from Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, USA, followed by a 4 year postdoc at the EMBL in Heidelberg.

Silvia González Pérez is Industrial Chemical Engineer by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (México). She has a PhD in Chemical Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (México) and a PhD in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry by the University of Barcelona (Spain). Since 2007, she is a teacher of subjects related to Physical Chemistry and Ethics for undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, Ecuador. Her research work is in modeling of surfaces, solids and molecules and the mechano-quantum description of adsorption, reactions and catalysis. She has published more than 30 papers, book chapters and a book in Physicochemistry. She has participated and organized several scientific events, such as Conferences and Seminars. She has been researching visitor in Spain, USA, France and México (ICN2, Universitat de Barcelona, Universidad Biccoca-Milano, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Massachusset Thecnology Institute (MIT),  Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) –Lyon, Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP)). In UTPL she has held several positions such as the Coordination of the Master’s Degree in Applied Chemistry, Chief of the Department of Chemistry and was Director of the School of Chemical Engineering, currently she is the Vice Chancellor of Research of this university. In 2018, received the Award for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World (Chemistry) otogued by the Organization for Women Scientists in the Developing and Elsevier Foundation and in 2019 received the Federico González Suárez Insignia, intended for outstanding individuals in the academic world, otorgued by the Quito City Government (GAD Metropolitano de Quito).

Michele Garfinkel is Head of the Policy Programme at EMBO. Her major areas of policy research are biotechnology, responsible conduct of research, and open science. Previously she was a policy analyst at the J. Craig Venter Institute. Her research there focused on identifying emerging societal concerns associated with new discoveries in genomics, particularly synthetic biology. She was a research fellow at the Center for Science, Policy and Outcomes at Columbia University, and earlier was a research associate at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Michele holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Washington, an A.B. from the University of California (Berkeley), and an M.A. in Science, Technology, and Public Policy from the George Washington University. She is an elected Fellow of the AAAS.

Annelies Pierrot-Bults is a former Treasurer of IUBS. She works on taxonomy and biogeography of oceanic zooplankton especially Chaetogntha in the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Museum Naturalis (Leiden) in The Netherlands. She has been president of the International Association of Biological Oceanography and Board member of SCOR, the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research. She is Treasurer of SCOPE, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment.  She has been president of the Women’s committee of the UvA, has been Treasurer of the European Women’s Lobby, and is still Treasurer of the University Women of Europe.
