Towards gender equality in scientific organizations

“Towards gender equality in scientific organizations” is a series of short articles, based on interviews with international sientific unions, summarizing a number of issues relating to gender equality . Five scientific unions, all SCGES members, were selected by the project Advancing gender equality in scientific organizations because of their relevant initiatives. The interviews were conducted by Nicky Hayes and Marie-Françoise Roy and two of them form the base of case studies in the report Towards gender equality in scientific organizations: assessment and recommendations. The report features also case studies of national academies conducted by Léa Nacache.

The series of short articles is introduced by a presentation of the project Advancing gender equality in scientific organizations lead jointly by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the  International Science Council (ISC) and the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES).

Each article presents briefly the situation of gender balance in the scientific community and in the organization, describes initiatives taken to improve the situation and highlghts key takeaways for other institutions

Biological Sciences : a majority of women scientists but gender balance issues remain

in Cristallography : few women in the scientific community, a good gender balance in the union

International Union of Immunological Societies: a significant budget for gender equality

Women in physics: underrerepresented in the scientific community but making a difference in their union

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research: fellowships for younger researcher with special consideration for child care issues
